Tips:

1. The most expected scenery of Qinghai-Tibet Railway starts from Golmud. You’d better take a train which arrives at Golmud in daylight so that you can fully appreciate the scenery.  Most travelers prefer Z265 and Z6811 as they will arrive at Golmud in the next day morning.

2.) The train tickets are issued to sell on the internet only 30 days before departure,  but it’s very hard to purchase the tickets especially in July & August. It’s almost impossible for both you and travel agency to get tickets on the internet. So some travel agents have to get the ticket from ticket scalper by paying them very high handing fee (They will charge this fee from clients. Usually USD 30~ 154 extra charges depends on season and different cities) to guarantee the ticket for you.

Cabins on Tibet Trains

There are three kinds of coaches in the train. The first coach is the soft-sleeper, the second coach is the hard-sleeper and the third coach is the soft-seat. Most travelers prefer the soft-sleeper as the journey is really long.

Soft-sleeper: The best coach of the train is the soft-sleeper.There are 4 berths in one compartment. Two upper berths and two lowers. The door of the soft-sleeper can be closed and locked.

Hard-sleeper: The second coach of the train is the hard-sleeper. There are 6 berths in one compartment. Two upper berths, two middle berths and two lowers berths. There is no door in The Hard-sleeper berths carriages.

How to pick up your Train Ticket?

Sometimes the travel agency will purchase the E-ticket for you. So, you need to pick up the real ticket at the railway station. After they have booked the train ticket, they will give you a booking number. You need the booking number, your passport and the copy of your Tibet Travel Permit to pick up your ticket at the ticket office. There are always long queues in front of every ticket window. So, you’d better go to the ticket office to pick up the ticket one day in advance.

Meals on the train

There is a dining car on the train for the passengers to have meals. The Dining car is next to the soft-sleeper coach. The dining car on the train provides 3 meals a day. For breakfast, it services eggs, bread, milk, and noodles. For lunch and dinner, it provides Tibetan style meals. The food on the Tibet train is much expensive than anywhere else in China but not good. You’d better take some solid food along with you.
